“Hi, Bella,” Dano said when he reached her and little Luca. He knelt down to Luca’s level. “Hey, lil dude, what’s going on?” He grinned as he turned to Bella. “He’s a beautiful little boy.”

Luca squeezed his mother’s leg and snuggled close.

“Thank you. He’s shy.” Bella smiled. “The wedding was lovely. I bet the service at the Angel Oak was too.”

“Yeah, it definitely was. There wasn’t a dry eye there, not even from the tourists that were milling around.” He stared at her. “You look really pretty today.”

Bella blushed and looked down at Luca. “Well, it isn’t often that I have a date. I had to dress up for my little man.”

Dano noticed how her green eyes sparkled when she laughed. He stared at her full lips and the black curly hair that nearly reached the center of her back. Bella was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. The small diamond stud alongside her nose caught the sun and glistened every time she scanned the crowd in front of the church.

“Are you looking for someone?”

“Dano, I don’t want to cause trouble.”

“Trouble?” He chuckled nervously. “What does that mean?” He felt the heat climb his neck.

“It’s just that—”

“I knew you would find a way to get my husband alone,” Jan interrupted as she came up behind them. “Are you two talking business?” She cocked her head and glared at Bella.

Dano spun toward her. “What the heck are you spouting off about?” He wanted to swear at his soon-to-be ex-wife, but there was a child listening. “You don’t get to weigh in on my life anymore, Jan. You’ve already made it perfectly clear that we’re going our separate ways.”

“You’re still my husband, so act like it.”

“I should go,” Bella said, her eyes beginning to well up.

“Yes, you should, and stay away from Dan. No wonder you have marital problems.”

Dano snarled at her. “How dare you talk to her that way. Leave me alone and stay out of my business.” He turned to apologize and saw Bella halfway to her car. The anger Dano felt and the pain Jan had just caused was too much. I have to fix this, he thought as he quickened his pace to follow her. “Bella… Bella, please stop, wait.” He looked back and saw Gina with a firm grip on Jan’s arm, leading her away. Thank you, Sis. I only need a few minutes. “Please stop. I need to talk to you.” He heard the double beep when she got to her car and opened the back door. She was buckling Luca in the car seat when he reached her. “I’m so sorry. Let me make this right. Jan had no business talking to you like that.”

She reached up and touched his lips with her fingertip. “You don’t need to say anything, Dano. Jan is your wife. I understand how that looked. I shouldn’t be talking to you unless it’s about work.”

“Jan’s leaving me in two days. She doesn’t care about me. How could she? That was a deliberate act just to make us feel awkward.
